Builderzine did an interview with Mr Clyde Seruelo of LuxLight on 25 May 2016.

Lighting Design is an integral part of Architectural design that is often overlooked and left to the last. Most times, the Lighting Designer is not even on the team of consultants during design stage. Who are Lighting Designers and when do we need them? Mr Clyde Seruelo an industry expert has been doing this for more than 10 years. He and his company currently provides pro bono lighting design consultancy to design partners. Why is he doing this and whats the catch?

What is Lighting Design and how does it add value to Architecture?

I feel that Lighting Design can compliment architecture itself. Lighting is 4th dimension of architecture. The Architect is main author of the object and he dictates the intention. However, lighting design can be used to added value from the engineering stand point and improve the utility of space. In terms of aesthetics, the Architect still has the final say.

What makes a good lighting designer?

A good lighting designer will know right amount of light to be used. if incorrect light are used then there may be light pollution or light loss. The function of lighting must not be forgotten. Lighting has to be natural and blend well with its environment. Nocturnal animals and insects  within the environment may be affected in a natural setting. Migratory birds may also be disoriented because of light.

Lighting designers have to keep up with the trends of lighting technology and design of the fixtures every 2 years with the fair Germany called Light + Building.

Lighting designers is one step above Architects in terms of lighting design because of technical knowledge on technical fields such as lumens output, glare rating, efficacy etc.

What is the motivation of you providing pro bono services to Designers?

In true lighting design a fee has to be paid for the services of a design. however lighting suppliers can provide this added service as they are selling lamps. Hence, they afford this extra service to promote their luminaire.

What difference does Luxlight provide?

We are more architecturally focused. Clyde’s strengths lies in his architectural training. He is able to think like an Architect and to spatially conceptualise lighting design. This is different from other suppliers who are more sales focused.

What is the smallest project to consult Clyde?

A project as small as a staircase is ok. The goal is to build up a relationship for future projects and confidence in delivering design products and intent.
